Finding Purpose Through Service: James Mwema’s GYDP Experience

James Mwema still remembers the day he first walked into the GYDP offices, unsure of what to expect but carrying a quiet hope that this opportunity would shape his future. Through the GYDP internship program, he was welcomed into an environment that was not just about work experience, but about purpose, growth, and service.
From the very beginning, James was placed in a space where learning was both intentional and practical. One of his most impactful experiences was being involved in mentorship programs for young high school girls. Standing in front of them, sharing lessons about confidence, discipline, leadership, and purpose, he slowly realized that mentorship was not just about giving advice, it was about listening, guiding, and helping young people see possibilities beyond their current circumstances.
Beyond the schools, James also had the opportunity to visit children’s homes with the GYDP team. These visits left a deep impression on him. He interacted with children who came from different backgrounds, many of them seeking encouragement, attention, and hope. Through education sessions and mentorship moments, James learned the power of presence, how simply showing up, speaking life, and spending time with children could make a lasting difference in their lives.
Within the organization, James served in the communications department, a space that challenged and expanded his skills. He contributed ideas for content, supported storytelling initiatives, and learned how to craft messages that could inspire action and awareness. It was here that he gained hands-on experience in communication work, learning how strategy, creativity, and consistency come together in impactful storytelling. Every task became a learning moment, and every project pushed him to think deeper and work smarter.
Looking back, James describes his time at GYDP as transformative. It was more than an internship, it was a journey of growth. He not only developed professional skills in communication and content creation but also grew personally through mentorship and community engagement. The experience taught him empathy, responsibility, and the importance of using his voice and skills to uplift others.
For James Mwema, GYDP was not just a place he interned, it was a space that shaped his purpose.
