Mwangaza wa Jua kwa Vijana [MJV]
Empowering rural youth in Kajiado and Makueni counties with skills in solar energy for sustainable livelihoods.
Project Concept
Mwangaza wa Jua kwa Vijana ("Sunlight for Youth" in Swahili) addresses the dual challenge of youth unemployment and limited clean energy access in rural areas. This project will train 1,000 young people (ages 18-30) in Kajiado and Makueni counties to become solar technicians and entrepreneurs. The goal is to build a local workforce capable of installing and maintaining off-grid solar solutions, fostering green jobs and improving energy security.
Key Activities
- Technical Training: Hands-on workshops on solar panel installation, battery maintenance, and system troubleshooting.
- Entrepreneurship Support: Business skills training, including marketing, financial management, and creating business plans for a solar enterprise.
- Community Sensitization: Raising awareness about the benefits of clean energy and connecting trained technicians with local markets.
Gender & Social Inclusion
This initiative will ensure a 50/50 gender balance in its recruitment, empowering young women to enter the traditionally male-dominated renewable energy sector. By promoting decentralized energy solutions, the project will also indirectly benefit women who bear the primary responsibility for household tasks, reducing time spent on collecting traditional fuels.
